Silent Spring

I've known about this title for many years now, but didn't bother to read it until I came across a paperback at a library sale. I thought I'd already know what it said, as we learned in naturopathic medical school about the various endocrine disorders particularly that can be caused by solvent and pesticide exposures. But... wow. This really drives the point home, particularly since it was written in the 1950s. Carson traces exposures to various pesticides (originally developed as part of chemical warfare during WWII, and repurposed when they found the "happy" side effect that they killed pests!), and describes how they affect every level of the food chain. I can't imagine how much more toxic the world is today. No wonder chronic disease and infertility are so rampant now... and pesticides and herbicides are just one category of toxins that have proliferated in the decades since this was written.
